How Much Water Should I Drink After a Massage?

Why does your registered massage therapist say, ‘Make sure you
drink plenty of water over the next few days’? Is this just the polite, standard, ‘professional’ thing to say, or is there some truth to it?

In general, people people do not drink enough water in their daily life and should strive to drink 8 glasses a day. This intake should increase when you take part in physical activities or therapeutic healing practices like having a massage.

Water makes up about 60% of your body and needs regularreplenishment. Some of the most important functions water has in the human body are; lubricating joints, regulating body temperature, kidney function, oxygen transportation to cells, aiding in healthy bowel movements etc.

Water will help the kidneys and other organs process the various substances that move through the body after a massage. It is common that  toxins are released during the course of a professional massage and water can assist in flushing them out to ensure you feel fantastic.

It is reported that a large number of people have to pee directly after a massage. This is said to happen because the process of kneading and working muscles during a massage pumps fluid out of the soft tissue into your circulatory system and into your kidneys. In turn, the massage itself can be quite dehydrating and require a direct replenishment of fluids.

Keep in mind that the tight muscles that prompted you to book a massage in the first place are probably causing a lack of circulation in that particular area. When your registered massage therapist is done working those areas, it opens the circulatory pathways to allow waste to travel outward. Water gives your kidneys the flushing tools it requires to effectively eliminate that waste out of your system

Overall, if you ensure that your body receives an abundance of daily water, your muscle tissue will remain healthier and hydrated and ready to respond to every daily functional need.  Be smart and kind to your body and drink lots of water!
